Metal Deck Railings – A Popular Choice for Custom Designs

By February 24, 2020 February 9th, 2024 Custom Decks, Deck Material, Railing

Metal railings have become extremely popular over the last decade.  In addition to the clean, elegant look they can add to your deck, there are quite a few other reasons behind their popularity.

Cost-Effective

Over time, the metal railings will save you money in maintenance and repairs.

Low Maintenance

Once installed, a railing built entirely of metal will not require sanding and staining as is needed with a wood railing.

Warranty

Fortress Railing Products offer a 15-year limited warranty (up to a lifetime warranty on some of their other products) on their metal railings. This limited warranty also “covers cracking, peeling, and blistering of the finish”.

Numerous Options

If you go to the Fortress website (FortressRailing.com), there is a section titled “Inspiration Gallery”. Each railing type has pictures available showing what the railing will look like once installed.  Their “Products” section gives you much more information, color lists, and multiple downloads with detailed information on each railing type.

Easily Customizable

With the numerous options offered by Fortress (railing, balusters, post caps), it provides our customers with seemingly unlimited ways to customize their railing.

View

Metal railings are typically built using thinner balusters than used on wood railings. This allows for a less obstructed view.  Fortress also offers cable and glass railing options.

This picture showcases an elevated deck with a Fortress Fe26 railing and balusters in Black Sand.  The owner decided to use 3 x 3 metal posts topped with pressed dome caps and straight square balusters.  The staircase had to be custom made by Creative Metal Works, located right here in Colorado Springs.

This customer decided to use metal and wood to create a striking and unique railing for their new deck. DBS built this railing using wood posts and the same iron railing panel as used in the first photo.  However, to give their deck some extra personality, the customer added a Fortress Ring Top Accent Panel and a customized drink cap to match the posts.

Our customer used different ideas to create their own style railing.  They chose to use stucco columns instead of wood or metal posts.  They also decided on balusters with knuckles to create a more personal look.  This customer also added light features to the stucco columns.

By using Fortress Railing Products, Decks by Schmillen is able to provide our customers with numerous ways to create a personalized, custom-looking railing that will enhance the beauty and style of their new deck.  There are also many ways to use Fortress Products with wood and composite.  We will discuss these features in a later blog.
